Course dates: Sept 8th – Nov 14th 2025 – ***SOLD OUT***
Course dates: Feb 2nd – April 10th 2026 – Bookings now open
This 10 week course is designed for anyone who is interested in using therapeutic photography techniques in their work settings, or purely for personal development.
The course is delivered entirely online as it is designed to be accessible to all, wherever you live and work. Each week, recorded lectures will be made available for you to watch in your own time (so there is no pressure to join live classroom sessions). These lectures will also be complimented by recorded interviews for you to watch with people who have been using therapeutic photography techniques for many years, and share their knowledge with you. Reading material will also be provided where relevant journal articles add value to the subject each week.
To ensure the course is interactive, we will also have weekly “practical” sessions where you will engage in therapeutic photography exercises and share these with fellow students (and Neil) for comment and feedback.
Throughout the 10 week course, there will also be 4 live group tutorials – these are usually held on a Friday evening between 7pm and 9pm UK time, and a Saturday morning between 9am and 11am UK time, but these can be adjusted once we get an idea of where participants are joining the course from – we want to make these as accessible as possible for all!
To deliver the course, we use Moodle, Padlet, and Zoom. You do not have to purchase any additional software as you will have access to all of these as a participant on the course.
Structure:
Week 1 will be a general introduction to therapeutic photography with a look at the history, development, terminology, and how (and why) structure can be added to provide a framework to use these techniques.
Week 2 will start to explore some of the theoretical perspectives linked to our selves and how photography can assist in the exploration of these.
Week 3 will expand on the self to consider the impact of society, the issues this may present, and how photography can externalise and objectify things that are difficult to speak about.
Week 4 will be a deeper dive into some of the theoretical perspectives around relationships and how this can shape behaviour. Within this, the advantages of using photographs with different personality types will be explored.
Week 5 will involve a consideration of emotions, how to express these through photography, and the advantages of group work in this approach.
Week 6 will see a widening of focus on relationships to include family, friends, and the differentiation of the self.
Week 7 will include consideration of our own narratives, how we deal with changes, and how photography aligns with personal stories.
Week 8 will focus on empowerment and associated outcomes when working with photographs in a therapeutic manner.
Week 9 will involve immersing our selves in photovoice, a particular approach which aligns with empowerment.
Week 10 will pull all of the learning together and consider what we need if we are facilitating therapeutic photography techniques. If you intend to facilitate groups, we will also be exploring how to appropriately end contact with clients as our therapeutic work concludes.
By the end of the course you will receive a certificate of completion to show that you have attended and engaged with the material over the 10 week period. There is a lot of flexibility on the course too, so if participants have specific areas of interest, these can be included and incorporated into the 10 week plan.
And the good news…there are no assessments!!! – it is a course which is designed to build your skills and knowledge, and enable you to have the confidence to employ these tools in your own practice.
